INDEPENDENTS FOOTBALL TEAM WINS EASY VICTORY OVER IOWA TEAM – FINAL SCORE 58 – 0.
Strollers Win Curtain Raiser, Defeating Tri-City Independents.

Muscatine’s fast team of football players who came to Rock Island to line up against the Independents were shown some good football. The game took place at Island City Park Sunday afternoon. When the totals were added up Rock Island had scored 58 points with 10 Touch downs, and 8 goal kicks. In 1907 Touchdowns were worth 5 points, had this game been played by today’s rules the score would have been 78-0. Rock Island ‘s weight was a big factor and the way the Independents tore through the line of Muscatine was evidence that they were going to pile up a big score.

Coleman was the star of the afternoon as it was he who ran through the opponent’s line whenever he was given the ball. Coleman scored 4 touchdowns and kicked 7 goal kicks on the day. Weidmann scored three of the touchdowns and kicked one goal kick. Newman, Meisenger and Larson each carried the ball over goal one time. The form showed by the local last week against Kewanee and yesterday against Muscatine is enough to show local football fans that Rock Island is going to make trouble for all the fast teams in this vicinity and some mighty good football will be seen for the next few weeks.

During the game, the Independents showed great ability to plunge through the line and played scientific football as well. Rock Island used the forward pass for gains on several occasions and long runs characterized the game.

There was very little fumbling and with this weight, speed and precision, the Independents should bring amateur football honors to Rock Island.

The Independents will go to Peoria next week to play the Social Athletics team of that city. On October 27th the Independents will play the Moline East Ends.
Before the big game the Rock Island Strollers and the Tri City Independents played a curtain raiser, the Strollers wining by a score of 5-0. Williams with good interference made a long run down the center of the field for the only touchdown. The Independents will go to Peoria next week to play the Social Athletics team of that city. On October 27th the Independents will play the Moline East Ends.
