INDEPENDENTS DEFEAT IOWA STATE TITLE HOLDERS November 30th - Columbus Junction and their fans arrived late to Island City park most likely due to the rain. The game start was pushed back until 3:30PM. Less that 100 die hard professional football fans battled the weather and made it out to the game. Both teams struggled to move the ball on the rain soaked field. The Independents could not hold on to any passes and fumbled the ball several times. Finally the locals put a drive together and MacManus carried the ball around end for a Touchdown. Second Half - More of the same, neither team could maintain control of the ball long enough to get a score. Late in the 4th quarter the Independents were finally able to get the ball down to the 1 foot line. McGinnis took the ball over for his first score of the season and put the game away for Rock Island. Source -Rock Island Argus December 1st, 1913 |
