INDEPENDENTS AND MARINES BEAT RIVALS FROM DAVENPORT November 11th - 5 Minneapolis stars help Rock Island defeat their rivals.
|
Rube Ursealla, Fred Chicken, Walt Buland, Ed Novak and Harry Gunderson agreed to come play for Rock Island. The Minneapolis Marine season was over so Walter Flanigan borrowed the players for a game to stack the team for the rivals from Davenport. Davenport brought in a few new players including big african American star Marshall to play end. |
Rock Island won the game and fans and papers cried foul since the Islanders had to use players from outside the area to beat them. The plan worked out for Rock Island, they won the game and were able to draw a crowd of 4,000. |
After the game Rock Island hosted an event for the players from Minneapolis. There was talk about the 1918 season and if they might consider coming to play for Rock Island. The players did not have to commit as many of them were turning their thoughts towards the war in Europe for the upcoming year. Source -Rock Island Argus December 3rd, 1917 |
