INJURED INDEPENDENTS FALL TO THE MARINES LATE

November 19th - The Minneapolis Marines won the toss and defended the North goal. After an exchange of punts Ursella took the ball over for the first score. In the Second period the Marines were able to open up the lead to 14-0.

The Independents appeared to be out of the contest, the Marines had not allowed more than 1 touchdown in several years. Rock Island drove the ball down near the Marine goal where it was fumbled into the endzone for a touchback. After holding the Marines again the Independents drove down and this time Nips Murphy hit Lee Dempsey on a 21yd pass to bring the score to 14-7.

In the second half the Independents came out and controlled the ball for nearly the entire 3rd quarter. They were stopped deep in Marine territory twice. On a 3rd attempt they threw the ball into the endzone for what appeared to be the tying touchdown. The Umpire ruled the pass incomplete. The Marines took over the ball at the 20-yard line.

In the 4th quarter the Marines scored to put the score at 20-7. The two teams battled it out and both added touchdowns late in the game. The Independents scored on a 1yd run by Fort but it was too little too late.

The 14 points scored by the Islanders were the most allowed by the Marines in 4 years. It was admitted by Flanigan that the Marines were the best team they had ever faced. Ursella and Chicken of the Marines said the Independents were the toughest team they had faced this year.
