STALEYS WIN WORLD'S DIRT TITLE

Four Independents were carried off the field yesterday. Quarterback Sid Nichols with a wrenched knee in the first quarter. Harry Gunderson was hit by George Traften a good 4 seconds after the whistle and had his face slid across while still on the ground after a tackle. Gunderson left the game and had to get 11 stiches over his left eye, 2 stiches on his upper lip and he had a broken hand. Fred Chicken had his knee twisted badlyon end run for a loss of 7 yards. In the final quarter Oke Smith also had his knee twisted in a pile.

The picture below comes from the Davenport Daily Times on November 8th 1920. As you can see below it says it is an action photo that was taken the day prior at the Independents/Stayleys game. The newspaper says that it is a photo of Geroge Trafton on the left about to hit the ball carrier.
This is the same photo, it was found on the Internet and is featured on the cover of a book "Old Leather" by Chris Willis. The book does not specify who is in the photo. The site on the Internet with the photo says that it is Jim Thorpe on the left about to hit the ball carrier.
