INJURED INDEPENDENTS FIGHT TO A TIE WITH THORNS

In the first out of town game of the season the Independents traveled to Monmouth to play the Chicago Thorns-Tornadoes. A strong wind blew out of the Northwest over the frozen field.

The Thorns not realizing that the Independents were a beat up bunch elected 10 minute quarters. The thought was that since the two teams were not on even grounds that the shorter the quarters the better.

The first three quarters the teams played to a scoreless tie. In the fourth quarter Waddy Kuehl made a critical mistake muffing a punt while standing at his own 20-yard line. Mooney lining up to make the tackle instead scooped up the ball and raced 20 yards for the score. With only 3 minutes remaining the Independents trailed 7-0.

Rube Ursella, still not 100 percent from his injury a few weeks earlier came into the game for Kuehl.

Francis Jordan took the kick at the 2 and weaved through the Thorns out to the 44 yard line. Over the next minute and a half Ursella used Novak, Mansfield and Jordan to march down the field for the score. Next it was up to Ursella to tie the game on a kick. The ball was placed and Rube kicked it straight through.

The Thorns took the kick and were held on downs and punted the ball out of danger. The Independents were only able to get off one play before the final whistle blew and the game ended with them in control of the ball near midfield.
